Auburn, New York – April 22, 2010 - Need a reason to escape in May? Check the calendar to find month-long national events, holidays and observances. A trip to New York's Finger Lakes Region is the perfect gift to give, personal indulgence or excuse to catch up with friends or loved ones. Special reasons to pack your bags in May include:

Mother's Day: Celebrate mom, a caregiver or someone who has made an impact on your life with the gift of time. Spend the day walking the charming streets of Aurora, N.Y., located in Cayuga County, while you peruse antique stores, sip wine at a local winery, and sit and visit at one of the village eateries. For something extra special, tour the MacKenzie-Childs Farmhouse. Stop into the shop and take a look at the new Flower Market enamelware  -- it makes the perfect gift this season and will brighten any table with its garden-fresh colors.

National Photography Month: The beauty of the Finger Lakes provides many opportunities to snap a great image. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, at the north end of Cayuga Lake, is a 10,000 acre habitat for thousands of migratory birds and wildlife. Capture rare architecture, gardens and glass mosaics at historic sites such as the Seward House and Willard Memorial Chapel. Visit  for other historic locations and ideas. Of course you can always get inspired at one of more than 200 vineyards across the region.

I Love Chocolate (May 22): King Ferry Winery  claimed its own event in May which pairs award winning wines with a variety of chocolate dishes. May is also Riesling Month in the Finger Lakes. Many wineries, including CJS Vineyards, will offer free tastings, wine pairings, sales promotions and other special happenings to celebrate.

Historic Preservation Month: The Community Preservation Committee of Auburn is hosting a guided church tour through 10 area churches on Sunday, May 16, from 12 – 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Willard Memorial Chapel, the only complete and unaltered Tiffany chapel known to exist.

American Bike Month: Grab your gear and indulge yourself in one of those long rides you simply don't have time for. Take a ride around Owasco Lake—one of the easiest and most picturesque trails around a Finger Lake. Or, try the "Between the Lakes" ride found along Route 90. Paved roads and mostly level riding make this an ideal bike tour. For a detailed Finger Lakes trail card, email
