William Seward was not only the first American Secretary of State to go abroad while holding that office, but he was also one of the first world travelers in U.S. history. During his numerous sojourns abroad throughout his life, Seward developed many of the ideas that would define his political legacy. His travels shaped his thinking on immigration, slavery, and expansion, among other subjects.  Seward also wrote about his journeys at length for an eager American public. In a stream of newspaper articles and ultimately a best-selling book, Seward described everything he encountered in vivid detail. Learn more about what he saw in this program, delivered by Dr. Jeffrey Ludwig, the Director of Education at the Seward House Museum in Auburn, NY. This event is free and open to all.
