Many of us look forward to Memorial Day weekend for its parades and barbecues and in Cayuga County there is no shortage of activities to attend. But let's not forget what the holiday is about: honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Did you know that in 1966 Waterloo, NY was recognized by Congress and President Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day? On May 5, 1866, Waterloo honored local Civil War Veterans residents by flying flags at half-staff and closing business for the day. In 1971 Memorial Day was declared a national holiday and it was decided it would be celebrated on the last Monday in May.

- Attend a memorial service or parade and show your support.
Memorial Day Celebrations
Auburn, NY
Memorial Day Parade and Food Truck Rodeo
Parade starts at 11am on Genesee Street. After the parade, enjoy an added performance by Downbeat Percussion in Market Street Park.
Noon The wreath laying ceremony takes place at Veteran's Memorial Park.
11am-2pm Food Truck Rodeo on Market Street. Mobile food vendors include Tonzi's Catering Company, Elbita's Cocina, Villano's, and Poppy's Treats and more. Bring along a chair or blanket and enjoy your lunch while listening to live music.
12:30-3pm-LIVE MUSIC! Weekend at Bernie's performs in the Market Street Band Shell

Weedsport NY:
At approximately 9:45 am we will hold a brief ceremony in the high school parking lot. Everyone is welcome to stay for the ceremony, which will last approximately 30 minutes. Please feel free to bring a lawn chair or remain in your car.
Memorial Day Drive Thru Parade: We encourage everyone to join us for our 2022 Drive-Thru Memorial Day Parade. Our parade will be held at 9:00 am at the Weedsport Jr.-Sr. High School Parking Lot.
Memorial Day Ceremony & Watch Fire: At approximately 9:45 am we will hold a brief ceremony in the high school parking lot. Everyone is welcome to stay for the ceremony, which will last approximately 30 minutes
