Illustration of Harriet Tubman

We have been closely monitoring the situation surrounding the NPS Underground Railroad page that had previously been altered to minimize Harriet Tubman’s impact and present an oversimplified narrative that undermined the strength and struggles of freedom seekers. While we are relieved to see the page restored to its original content, we are deeply disturbed that such changes were made from the outset.

Harriet Tubman is a foundational figure in American history. Her legacy cannot — and will not — be erased. History must be told in its full context, and we reject any effort to revise or dilute the truth of Harriet Tubman’s work, or to gloss over the realities of the Underground Railroad.

As Auburn is Harriet Tubman’s Chosen Hometown, Tour Cayuga is proud to carry forward her story and legacy. We stand firm in honoring and uplifting her full contributions — even when others attempt to minimize or erase them.

Harriet Tubman’s presence remains deeply embedded in this community, and we continue committed to safeguarding her legacy — and are proud to do so in partnership with organizations that share this mission.

Finally, while this incident is not directly tied to current debates around diversity, equity and inclusion, we also stand firmly in our values to continue supporting and promoting representation and inclusivity of marginalized individuals and groups and advocating for their right to the opportunities without being overlooked due to biases, whether implicit or explicit.
