Cayuga County, October 2024 – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Cayuga County is proud to join communities across the nation in recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans to the fabric of our society. Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich cultural heritage, history, and countless achievements of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, andCentral and South America.
This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together”, highlighting and recognizing the many Hispanic and Latino people who have paved the way for future generations. It also captures the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity that define the Hispanic experience. This theme is a call to action to embody the change we wish to see in the world. It’s an invitation to recognize the pioneers among us who have broken barriers and forged paths of opportunity and empowerment for our communities. “As a Latina myself, I am proud of the expanding offers coming to Cayuga County.” said, Karen Kühl, Executive Director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism.
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The dates of observance were selected to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Chile, Nicaragua, which all celebrate their independence this time of year beginning on September 15th and continuing into the month of October. The Cayuga County Office of Tourism encourages residents and visitors to explore the Hispanic flavors, goods, and services in Auburn.
