Pine trees in the dark evening sky

In Cayuga County, the night sky becomes something more than just a pretty view. When the sun dips below the horizon and the world quiets, a different kind of adventure unfolds. It’s one that invites you to linger outside a little longer, to breathe in the cool evening air, and to find wonder overhead.

For Harriet Tubman, the night sky was more than a source of beauty. It offered guidance, lighting the path toward freedom. Today, that same sky still stretches above the land she called home—above the churches where she prayed, the gardens she tended, and the communities she helped build. It now shines down on travelers who come not just to see, but to feel: to reflect, reconnect, and experience something deeper beneath the stars.

Here, a walk through moonlit woods, a quiet moment by the lake, or a night spent tracing constellations at a planetarium becomes more than just your typical outing.

In Auburn, the Harriet Tubman Home pays tribute to the woman who once looked to the stars for direction. While the exact tools Tubman used to navigate the Underground Railroad remain debated, we know she traveled by night and relied on her instincts and natural signs, likely including the night sky.

Exploring Cayuga County After Dark

Inside the visitor center, a quote from Frederick Douglass honors this connection:

⭐️Sterling Nature Center: Skywatching by the Lake

At the northern edge of Cayuga County, the Sterling Nature Center offers two miles of scenic shoreline and a dark-sky sanctuary for nature lovers. With minimal light pollution, this is one of the best places in the region to experience the stars.

While typically open dawn to dusk, the Center also hosts special evening programming like Full Moon Walks, comet viewings, and night photography hikes. These guided outings offer a unique chance to connect with the natural world after hours.

⭐️The Inns of Aurora: Stargazing in Style

For a luxurious yet laid-back night under the stars, the Inns of Aurora offer one of the most memorable experiences in the Finger Lakes. Guests can borrow telescopes, stargazing kits, and constellation maps, or simply walk to the lakeshore for an unobstructed view of the night sky.

One of their most popular offerings is the Sunset Hike and Stargazing experience. This guided hike ends at a scenic overlook where visitors gather around a campfire for s’mores and storytelling beneath the stars. As one guest put it, it’s “a whole new way to experience Aurora: the cozy constellation of lights in our little village alongside the actual constellations in the night sky.”

⭐️Southern Cayuga Planetarium: A Guided Journey to the Stars

At the Southern Cayuga Planetarium, visitors can explore the cosmos without ever leaving the ground. The planetarium hosts 30-minute evening star shows from October through June. Each show includes a tour of the night sky, followed by a fun Q&A session and take-home stargazing activity to continue the experience outdoors. It’s ideal for families, curious learners, or anyone who wants to understand what they’re seeing when they look up on a clear night. Please note that the Southern Cayuga Planetarium is currently undergoing renovations and will reopen in September 2025.
