There’s something about live theatre that no screen can replicate. As someone who has loved the stage since childhood, I still feel that rush of anticipation when the lights dim and the curtain rises. Whether it’s a bold rock opera, a classic musical, or a heartfelt drama — theatre has always offered something extraordinary. It’s immediate, immersive, and above all, magical.

I’ve done my best to pass that love on through the generations. I still smile when I remember taking my 6-year-old granddaughter to see Cinderella. I whispered to her mom, “How did they change her from rags to a ballgown so fast?” Without missing a beat, my granddaughter whispered back, wide-eyed: “Grandma, it’s magic.”

Another unforgettable moment was my grandson watching a show and saying, “Theatre is better than the movies because it’s made with real people!” It’s that sense of wonder, connection, and realness that keeps me coming back — and why I believe live theatre still matters.

This year, that magic feels especially special as it is the 50th anniversary of Jesus Christ Superstar. I vividly remember seeing it for the first time — the lights, the energy, the music that was so bold and different. It was a powerful and emotional experience that’s stayed with me for decades. To see it honored this year brings back a flood of memories, and I can’t wait to experience it all over again.

Whether you’re a lifelong theatre lover or attending your first show, here are five reasons why live performances remain essential:
