Cayuga County Office of Tourism Celebrates 30 Years

Over the past 30 years, the Office of Tourism has launched numerous initiatives to showcase the county’s diverse attractions. From the serene shores of its eight lakes to the historic landmarks associated with figures like Harriet Tubman, Cayuga County offers a wide range of experiences for visitors. The organization’s efforts have significantly contributed to making these attractions accessible and well known to a broader audience.

“We know that tourism isn’t just about attracting visitors—it’s about creating meaningful connections between people and place,” says Karen Kühl, Director of Tourism. “Over the past 30 years, we’ve leaned into our role as storytellers and stewards of Cayuga County’s culture, and we remain committed to growing tourism in a way that supports our community’s values and future.”

Reflecting on the origins of the organization, Meg Vanek, the founding director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism, recalled, “It’s been amazing to be part of and continue to watch the Cayuga County Office of Tourism’s growth that began as an idea of several insightful community leaders to fund and create a dedicated tourism promotion program back in 1995. Starting out with a small budget and staff of one, the organization has grown to the award-winning tourism industry leader it is today, spurring economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents.”

In recent years, the Office of Tourism has been recognized for its commitment to inclusive tourism including partnerships with organizations like Travel Unity, Wheel The World, and Destinations International. A key element of the office’s success has been its embrace of community-driven tourism. From collaborating with local farmers and artisans to highlighting underrepresented voices in marketing campaigns, the organization ensures that tourism initiatives reflect and support the people who call Cayuga County home. This approach not only enhances the visitor experience but also empowers local stakeholders to shape the county’s tourism narrative, reinforcing a shared sense of place and pride.

The impact of tourism on Cayuga County’s economy has been substantial. In 2024 alone, tourism generated $157 million and contributed $18.66 million in state and local taxes, providing significant tax relief to local households. This sector also supported the employment of over 1,500 individuals. Cayuga County Tourism Economics Report
